Rock, sediment, emotions, earth…all of these are realms that I find layers in. Thinking about the way a foundation can be laden with layer upon layer of earth, knowledge, or emotional maturity, this painting reflects the unique capacity we, as humans, share with our natural world, to build upon experiences in wisdom and gratitude.

The layers most prominently inspiring this piece are the layers of vegetation in a setting like a forest, that is referred to as Stratification. The forest floor is the foundation where the root and soil layers are found, and upon that, the herbaceous, shrub, understory, and canopy layers are formed and grown. The taller and more layered a plant habitat, the more stable the eco system.
